Odisha Teenager Dies After Self-Immolation Over Stalker’s Harassment in Sundargarh

An 18-year-old tribal college student from Sundargarh, Odisha, died on Monday after suffering 92% burn injuries in a tragic self-immolation incident triggered by continuous harassment from a 24-year-old stalker. The teenager had set herself on fire late Friday at her home after being allegedly stalked and harassed again inside a passenger bus.

Doctors at Rourkela hospital confirmed she succumbed to multiple organ failure caused by severe burns. Police revealed that the accused had been stalking and tormenting her for nearly two years, with the harassment intensifying in recent days.

Her family discovered her in flames after waking to her screams and rushed her to the hospital. Despite government plans to airlift her for better treatment, her condition deteriorated rapidly.

This is the latest in a disturbing rise of self-immolation cases linked to harassment and cyber threats in Odisha, raising urgent concerns over women’s safety, stalking laws, and crime prevention on college campuses.
