Bangladesh Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Sentenced to Death by Special Tribunal; Hasina Responds

A Special Tribunal in Bangladesh has sentenced former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina to death, holding her responsible for severe human rights violations committed during last year's anti-government protests.

Trial Held in Absence of Hasina

The tribunal conducted the proceedings in Hasina’s absence, concluding that she was involved in “inhumane crimes” during the violent crackdown on students’ demonstrations.

The court declared her guilty and announced the verdict against her.

Security Tightened Nationwide

Following the tribunal’s decision, security measures have been significantly strengthened across Bangladesh to prevent any unrest or retaliatory incidents.

Charges Against Hasina

Hasina faces accusations of:

Ordering or allowing brutal suppression of student-led protests,

Failing to prevent lethal force used by security forces,

Overseeing actions that led to multiple casualties.

Along with Hasina, the tribunal also sentenced:

The then Home Minister, and

The former Police Chief,

holding them accountable for ordering or allowing violent crackdowns.

Hasina Rejects the Verdict

Reacting from India—where she has reportedly taken refuge—Sheikh Hasina strongly condemned the verdict.

She described the judgment as:

> “Biased and politically motivated.”

She has consistently denied all charges against her.Among the accused, only former Police Chief Abdullah Al-Mamun appeared in court when the sentencing was announced.
